Job Summary
The HVAC Mechanic installs, maintains, and repairs commercial heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment/systems. This position maintains the proper operations, temperatures, and safety of commercial HVAC equipment/systems.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience: Installing, maintaining, and repairing commercial heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment/systems.
- Education: High School diploma or G.E.D., with vocational/technical school certification and apprenticeship preferred.
- Certification: Valid Oklahoma driver’s license and a Mechanical Journeyman license or equivalent in Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, and Gas Fitting, and EPA 1 and 2 or EPA 3 (Universal) certification within sixty (60) days. Must obtain Boiler Operator license within six (6) months of hire.
- Knowledge: Installation, maintenance, and repair procedures for commercial heating and air-conditioning systems, including boilers and chillers; maintenance and repair procedures for food service and restaurant equipment; local, state, and federal regulations and standards related to HVAC systems; safety procedures and practices associated with HVAC maintenance work; computer software applications, including word processing programs; Oklahoma City Zoological Park and departmental policies and procedures (acquired within 30 days of hire).
Skills
- Troubleshooting, installation, and maintenance of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems;
- Troubleshooting and maintenance of food service and restaurant equipment, including low-temperature walk-ins and reach-ins;
- Reading and interpreting plans, blueprints, and technical drawings;
- Understanding and following complex instructions and directions;
- Visual acuity, hearing, balance, and manual dexterity;
- Work collaboratively with staff, contractors, vendors, inspectors, officials, and the public;
- Manage multiple tasks simultaneously;
- Work in environments with frequent interruptions and changing priorities;
- Follow safe work practices, recognize workplace hazards, and use appropriate safety equipment;
- Drive throughout the Oklahoma City area as required;
- Work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during emergency situations, including weather-related events as needed.
Physical Demands
- Required to walk, sit and stand for periods of time;
- Push, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs.;
- Bend, stoop, kneel, and move intermittently throughout the day;
- May be exposed to fumes, odors, dust, moving mechanical parts and vehicles;
- Exposed to extreme weather conditions, such as heat, cold, rain, snow and ice;
- Exposed to potentially dangerous animals.

Core Responsibilities And Accountabilities (Essential Functions)
- Maintains and services HVAC and refrigeration systems in guest-facing and back-of-house facilities.
- Diagnoses issues, completes repairs, and performs preventive maintenance on HVAC, refrigeration, and commercial food service equipment.
- Maintains required licensure and certifications.
- Maintains compliance with applicable local, state, and federal codes and safety standards related to HVAC installation, maintenance, and repair.
- Coordinates vendor and subcontractor support for HVAC-related work.
- Collaborates with trades and departments to support Zoo operations.
- Manages service schedules, parts inventories, and maintenance documentation.
