Essential Job Functions
- Cuts and bends tubing to correct length and shape, using cutting and bending equipment and tools.
- Cuts and threads pipe, using machine-threading or hand-threading equipment.
- Joins tubing or pipes to various refrigerating units by means of sleeves, couplings or unions.
- Solders joints, using torch, forming complete circuit for refrigerant.
- Installs expansion and discharge valves in circuit.
- Connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and connects control panels to power source.
- Installs air and water filters in completed installation.
- Injects small amounts of refrigerant into compressor to test systems and adds Freon gas to build up prescribed operating pressure.
- Mechanic observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls to insure proper operation.
- Tests joints and connections for gas leaks, using gauges or soap-and-water solution.
- Wraps pipes in insulation batting and secures them in place with cement or wire bands.
- Replaces defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses and electrical wiring to repair installed units.
- May install, repair and service air conditioners, ranging from fifteen to one hundred and fifty tons cooling capacity in warehouses and other large buildings.
Education & Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent
- 5 to 7 years journey-level HVAC
- Completion of HVAC apprenticeship
- FREON recovery certificate
- Consideration will be given to relevant professional experience commensurate with assignment.
Knowledge & Skills
- Extensive knowledge in specialized functions.
- A wide and comprehensive acquaintance with, and understanding of, both general and specific aspects of the job and their practical application to complex problems and situations ordinarily encountered.
- Hand and power tools common to trade.
- Ability to interpret and apply codes, blueprints, wiring diagrams and engineering drawings.
- Knowledge of ISO 9002 and JCAHO standards, pneumatic and electronic controls, proficient in Trane Tracer Summit, Honeywell, and Johnson Controls computer software.
- Experience with mechanical industrial water treatment, quality assurance and inspection.
- Experience with Chiller Systems up to 600 Tons.
- Knowledgeable in the operation, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing HVAC equipment, including heating and ventilation equipment, air conditioners, and refrigerators.
