HVAC Journeyman

About the Role

The Journeyman HVAC Technician will install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, including boilers, pumps, chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, hydronic air handling units, and related accessories. Technicians perform tests, analyze data, and provide recommendations to ensure equipment functions properly.

Responsibilities

• Monitor, evaluate, and troubleshoot operating equipment and controls to ensure safe operation and lifecycle performance.
• Perform routine repairs to pump seals, bearings, and other components.
• Inspect and test systems to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and detect malfunctions.
• Determine customer concerns with their applied HVAC systems.
• Comply with safety procedures, standards, policies, and maintain a clean work area.
• Discuss system malfunctions with customers to isolate problems or verify corrections.
• Record and report faults, deficiencies, and unusual occurrences, including time and materials expended on work orders.
• Test pipe or tubing joints for leaks.
• Adjust system controls to manufacturer-recommended settings.
• Recommend, develop, or perform preventive maintenance, such as cleaning, lubricating, or changing filters.
• Install auxiliary components like valves, ducts, pipes, blowers, dampers, flues, and stokers following blueprints.
• Assist with repair and maintenance tasks in coordination with teams.
• Install, connect, and adjust thermostats, humidistats, and timers.
• Generate work orders to address deficiencies.
• Connect pipes or tubing to equipment, fuel, water, or refrigerant sources.
• Assemble, position, and mount HVAC equipment following blueprints.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• 5 years of HVAC operation, maintenance, and repair experience in the HVAC and refrigeration trade.
• Knowledge of HVAC repairs, maintenance, installation techniques, electrical circuits, wiring, motor operating principles, and local electrical codes.
• Effective communication skills with internal teams and customers.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, diagnose problems, read blueprints, diagrams, and perform basic math.
• Proficiency in using hand and power tools.
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and criminal background.

Qualifications

• Physical ability to operate HVAC machinery, tools, and equipment.
• Capability to perform tasks requiring stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
• Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently.

Work Environment

This role primarily operates alone on HVAC and boiler equipment in various environments, including extreme cold or heat. Vehicles serve as the base of operations.

Physical Demands

Physical demand requirements are at levels of medium work, involving frequent movement and occasional heavy lifting.
