HVAC Controls Technician

About the role

Envelop Critical Environments (ECE), part of the Envelop Group family of companies, delivers high-end airflow technology solutions to research laboratories, healthcare and life sciences facilities. ECE partners with industry leaders such as Phoenix Controls, Strobic Air, Haakon, Cosatron, Aircuity and Tamco to integrate advanced control systems into critical spaces. The Controls Technician will install, start up, troubleshoot, commission and service control systems for these specialized environments, applying expertise in HVAC systems, airflow controls, hydronics, IT networking and building automation.

Responsibilities

• Perform hands-on installation and programming of HVAC control systems (thermostats, sensors, actuators, controllers) to project specifications and industry standards.
• Conduct system testing and commissioning to verify functionality, performance and compliance with design requirements.
• Troubleshoot technical issues during installation and commissioning, applying problem-solving skills to resolve discrepancies.
• Ensure all work meets the highest standards of quality and safety.
• Communicate with customers and stakeholders to provide project updates, address concerns and ensure satisfaction.
• Maintain accurate project documentation: installation records, as-built drawings, programming files and commissioning reports.
• Provide service support for existing systems to ensure efficient operation and assist facility engineers.
• Perform preventative maintenance and repair of commercial HVAC controls, including diagnosing breakdowns, testing parts, disassembling and assembling components, and making necessary repairs.
• Coordinate and deliver customer training and complete project closeout documents in a timely manner.

Requirements

• High school diploma or state-recognized GED; mechanical, electrical or related technical degree preferred.
• At least 2 years of experience with temperature control systems, HVAC systems, DDC controls, HVAC electronics, running conduit and terminating wiring.
• At least 2 years of experience installing and/or servicing electronic controls, HVAC or other mechanical equipment.
• Thorough understanding of testing, validation and troubleshooting of large and complex control systems.
• Thorough understanding of mechanical systems, equipment and common control sequences, plus fundamental control theory and logic.
• Programming, hardware and troubleshooting expertise with one or more Building Automation System platforms (Tridium, Siemens, Trane, Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric, etc.).
• Excellent critical thinking, self-motivation, decisive judgment and ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Proven analytical skills and attention to detail with ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, manuals, electrical diagrams and control sequences.
• Ability to work in a team environment and communicate clearly with customers, contractors and colleagues.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and related software.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Consistent physical work at customer locations, often on your feet.
• Continually enforce the highest safety standards and maintain accountability of company-issued and procured assets.
• Ability to work in varied conditions including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing ladders, scaffolds and high-lift equipment; working in ducts, crawl spaces, roofs, basements, above ceilings and in diverse indoor/outdoor, hot/cold environments.
• Specific vision abilities required: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and focus adjustment.
• Must be able to use hand tools, laptop, email, smartphone and tablet.
• Must be able to carry and move equipment and tools weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted.
