HVAC/BOILER-MECHANIC

About the role

We are looking for a Boiler Mechanic to join our Maintenance team at PIM’s Somerset site in New Jersey. This role is responsible for the uninterrupted operations of the utilities in the manufacturing plant and office facility, including installation, repair, upgrade, troubleshooting, and product recommendation of Steam Generation, Compressed Air, Water Treatment, Chilled Water, and Refrigeration systems. You will partner with plant, facilities, and production management staff, as well as the maintenance department, and report food safety and quality problems to Plant Management.

This role requires work at all levels and positions—overhead, below ground, inside, outside on the roof, in small or controlled areas—and the use of ladders, manlifts, forklifts, and other hand and powered equipment.

Responsibilities

• Maintain proper steam pressures within specs, perform daily water treatment tests, and ensure water quality.
• Maintain proper Compressed Air levels throughout the facility, including basic equipment service and associated piping and devices.
• Monitor and service the Water Treatment room for proper function and disposal of process fluids.
• Monitor and service the Chilled Water system, including cooling tower maintenance, pump service, and all attached equipment.
• Install, service, and repair heating and air conditioning systems.
• Service Curing room utilities, including control valves, monthly filter PMs, cooling circuit repairs, and maintenance such as coil cleaning and replacement.
• Obtain and maintain all required certificates and ensure systems are up to code.
• Report food safety and quality issues to Plant Management and SQFP.
• Follow PIM Brands GMP rules and monitor fellow employees for adherence to GMPs.
• Comply with all applicable safety and clean workplace standards, policies, and procedures.
• Inspect and test systems to verify compliance with plans and specifications and detect malfunctions.
• Recommend, develop, and perform preventive and general maintenance procedures (e.g., cleaning, power washing, lubrication, filter changes).
• Repair or replace defective equipment, components, and wiring.
• Test electric circuits and components for continuity using testing equipment.
• Test equipment after repairs and follow up with requesters to verify problem resolution.
• Record and report faults, deficiencies, and unusual occurrences, as well as time and materials consumed on work orders.
• Test pipe or tubing joints and connections for leaks using gauges or soap and water solutions.
• Maintain and adjust system controls to manufacturer-recommended settings.
• Lay out and connect electrical wiring between controls and equipment.
• Install auxiliary components to heating/cooling equipment (e.g., expansion and discharge valves, air ducts, pipes, blowers, dampers, flues, stokers).
• Install, connect, and adjust thermostats, humidistats, and timers.
• Generate work orders to address deficiencies.
• Join pipes or tubing to equipment and fuel, water, or refrigerant sources to form circuits.
• Assemble, position, and mount heating or cooling equipment.
• Study blueprints, design specifications, and manufacturer recommendations to ensure proper equipment configuration.
• Cut and drill holes in floors, roofs, and walls for installation in accordance with GMP and PIM standards.
• Wrap pipes in insulation.
• Measure, cut, thread, and bend pipe or tubing.
• Fabricate, assemble, and install ductwork and chassis parts using portable metal-working tools and welding equipment.
• Ability to work additional hours and/or shifts as needed.

• Manual dexterity to handle or feel objects, tools, and controls.
• Lifting and moving objects weighing at least 50 lbs.

Work Environment

This role is generally performed in the manufacturing plant. The plant floor is a large, busy manufacturing operation with noise, active movement, objects on the floor, and constant traffic flow of motorized equipment. Required GMP apparel includes hair nets, beard nets, assigned work uniforms, protective eyewear, and gloves when on the plant floor.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED strongly preferred.
• Vocational training or on-the-job training in machine operations and metal fabrication is necessary.
• Ability to read and follow drawings, blueprints, and written specifications.
• Blue seal refrigeration license required; blue seal boiler or higher preferred.
• Math and computer skills are preferred.
• Minimum of 1 year of experience as a maintenance mechanic, preferably in an industrial environment.
• Competency in the following areas:
  • Machinery repair and installation (pumps, mixers, mechanical equipment).
  • General electrical work.
  • Plumbing, pipefitting, and welding.
  • General maintenance (lubrication, painting, equipment fabrication).
• Ability to read, speak, and write English is required.
