HSEQ Inspector
About the role
The Traveling HSEQ Inspector is the independent eyes of the VPs of Operations in the field; auditing health, safety, environmental and quality performance across every active MBA job site. This role verifies that all personnel onsite are upholding MBA's commitment to build safely, fulfill environmental obligations and deliver work that meets code, specification and owner requirements. The role sits outside the project teams it inspects, so findings reach leadership directly, without being filtered by schedule or budget pressure.
Responsibilities
Safety
- Conduct scheduled and unannounced site safety audits; issue findings with corrective actions and close-out dates
- Verify overall adherence to the MBA Site-Specific Safety plan
- Verify subcontractor safety programs, JSAs/JHAs, permits to work and training records before mobilization and throughout the job
- Audit high-risk activities: excavation and trenching, confined space, hot work, lifting and rigging, energized work and LOTO, working at heights, and H2S exposure
- Lead or support incident investigations, root cause analysis and lessons learned; track recordables and near misses
- Deliver and audit site orientations, toolbox talks and stand-downs; hold stop-work authority on every site
Environmental
- Inspect SWPPP controls, spill prevention, secondary containment and waste handling
- Verify compliance with permit conditions and the requirements of the state agency in each site's jurisdiction
- Document and report spills and releases per owner and regulatory timelines
Quality
- Audit the project Quality and Inspection & Test Plan (ITP); witness hold and witness points
- Witness hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure tests and review test packages
- Inspect concrete placement, rebar, anchor bolts, grout and structural steel erection
- Verify electrical installation, grounding and termination; support pre-commissioning checks
- Issue and track NCRs through disposition and close-out
Independent Reporting
- Complete a written inspection report after every site visit, with photos, findings and open items, sent directly to the VPs of Operations
- Maintain HSEQ logs, NCR registers and leading/lagging indicators, and issue a monthly HSEQ scorecard by project so the VPs of Operations can compare sites and teams
- Inform Project Managers and Superintendents of findings and track corrective actions to close-out; escalate critical or unresolved findings (imminent danger, environmental releases, nonconforming work being covered up) to the VPs of Operations the same day
- Identify recurring issues across projects and recommend updates to MBA procedures, ITPs and subcontractor prequalification
Qualifications
- 5+ years in construction safety, QA/QC inspection or a combined HSEQ role on industrial, oil and gas, or energy projects
- Travel 80% or more, living on the road nationwide, with frequent flights, long drives and overnight stays most of the week; extended weekdays and occasional weekends
- Required OSHA 30-Hour Construction
- Working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 and 1910
- H2S Clear and current First Aid/CPR (or ability to obtain before first assignment)
- Ability to read multi-discipline project drawings and documents
- Strong written reporting skills and proficiency with tablets, Microsoft 365 and photo documentation
- Ability to deliver unwelcome findings professionally and hold firm under pushback from project teams
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check, and to meet owner site access requirements (e.g., TWIC where applicable)
Preferred Qualifications
- Procore Tool Certifications
- Safety credential such as CHST, ASP/CSP or OHST
- Experience overseeing subcontractors in a design-build or EPC environment
- Bilingual English/Spanish
