About The Role

The Special Education Paraprofessional assists students individually or in small groups in meeting course expectations and improving academic and vocational skills. They work under the direction of the special education teacher and are responsible for implementing classroom procedures, reinforcing student behavior, administering tests, and assisting with IEP goals.

Responsibilities

  • Absorb and implement classroom procedures and reinforce student’s positive behavior
  • Administer tests orally to students in both resource and classroom settings
  • Reinforce organizational and note taking skills
  • Grade materials for immediate feedback
  • Use the computer for drill and remediation as well as homework and classroom assignments
  • Support the implementation of specialized or vocational educational programs for each student
  • Implement IEP accommodations as specified in individual IEPs
  • Provide immediate feedback on materials reviewed
  • Help the student achieve his/her IEP goals by meeting benchmarks as scheduled
  • Organize and supervise off-campus and vocational programs for students
  • Participate in classroom instruction in cooperation with certified staff
  • Mentor and facilitate classroom instruction delivered through cooperative work group model
  • Preview instructional materials and develop instructional plans
  • Communicate student progress to students' parent/guardian
  • Offer suggestions to classroom teacher and case manager for appropriate accommodations and modifications of student IEP
  • Compile data to be given to the case manager for writing a Behavior Intervention Plan
  • Assist and monitor when student uses the restroom
  • Assist and facilitate tutoring or one-on-one instructional time as required by student need
  • Assist and or facilitate crisis management up to and including physical restraints when appropriate
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Must have current Paraprofessional designation in accordance with requirements specified on ISBE Form 73—95 (5/04)
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • A minimum of 60 college credit hours required for Paraprofessional designation
  • MUST POSESS A VALID ILLINOIS DRIVERS LICENSE and be able to obtain a School Bus Driver’s Permit / Driver’s license
  • Instructional and assessment skills with a focus on the special education population
  • Must be able to pass Faith's Law employment History Review
  • Hours - School day 7:30 am to 4:00 pm with experience in crisis intervention and strong communication and interpersonal skills

Qualifications

  • Education/Experience: Minimum requirements include a current Paraprofessional designation, a valid Illinois driver’s license, and experience in crisis intervention. A Bachelor's degree is preferred but not required.
  • Skills/Knowledge: Must possess a valid Illinois School Bus Driver’s Permit / Driver’s license; basic computer proficiency including working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; adherence to policies and procedures; knowledge of Individualized Education Plan (IEP) eligibility, planning, instruction, and service delivery processes; skill in organizing and prioritizing work loads to meet deadlines; skill in telephone etiquette.
