About the role

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) position at Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas assists people who have Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities. Under the supervision of the Residential Coordinator or designee, DSPs provide direct care and support to people living in their homes, licensed or unlicensed. They support people to learn skills that enable them to live with less supervision and be active members of their communities. DSPs ensure the safety and well-being of people they support, adhering to Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas policies and procedures, and relevant regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides necessary supports as identified by the Person-Centered Planning Team.
  • Communicates and coordinates with families, members of the Person-Centered Planning Team, day programs, and other service providers as necessary and appropriate.
  • Teaches, supports, and performs household tasks, such as cleaning, preparing meals, planning budgets, food shopping, etc.
  • Aids in developing skills in daily living for people they support, following their Person-Centered Plans consistently.
  • Makes sure medication is taken as prescribed, teaches people to take their medication independently, and assists with medication administration.
  • Performs crisis intervention; provides emergency First Aid or CPR and other types of assistance.
  • Participates in social activities planned by people they support.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as required by the program.
  • Ensures compliance with Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Monitors the home for repairs and maintenance needs, ensuring fire and safety procedures are carried out.
  • Checks for proper sanitation and security conditions within the home.
  • Monitors visitors to the home.
  • Documents all services in the electronic case management system daily.
  • Works cooperatively and respectfully with the entire support team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or IEP, with a minimum of 1 year of experience working in the field of intellectual/developmental disabilities. Exceptions may be made for less than 1 year experience with enhanced supervision by a Qualified Professional until the year is obtained.
  • Medication Administration Certification is preferred but required by the end of the introductory period.
  • Maintains current certifications and trainings required by CMS or relevant governmental entities.
  • Computer skills are required for documentation.
  • Written and verbal communication skills must be clear and professional.
  • Problem-solving ability.
  • Pass relevant local and state background checks and drug testing requirements.
