About the role
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) position at Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas assists people who have Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities. Under supervision of the Residential Coordinator or designee, DSPs provide direct care and support to people living in their homes, licensed or unlicensed. They support people to learn skills that enable them to live with less supervision and be active members of their communities.
Responsibilities
- Provides necessary supports as identified by the Person-Centered Planning Team.
- Communicates and coordinates with families, members of the Person-Centered Planning Team, day programs, and other service providers as necessary and appropriate.
- Teaches, supports, and performs household tasks, such as cleaning, preparing meals, planning budgets, shopping, etc.
- Aids people in developing skills in daily living, following their Person-Centered Plans consistently.
- Makes sure people take their medications as prescribed, teaches them how to take them independently, and assists with administration.
- Monitors people's safety, performs crisis intervention, provides emergency first aid, and assists with other types of assistance.
- Plans and participates in social activities with people.
- Participates in assessments and the Person-Centered Planning Team as needed.
- Transports people and provides mobility training to attend appointments, shop, or go to events.
- Documents activities and behaviors in Electronic Health Records (EHR) and client files.
- Prepares food according to a developed menu reflecting individual preferences and dietary needs.
- Taughts and supports people to make healthy choices when shopping or dining out.
- Attends staff meetings and trainings as required by the program.
- Maintains compliance with Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Inspects the home and reports repairs and maintenance needs.
- Ensures fire and safety procedures are carried out as directed.
- Checks for proper sanitation and security conditions within the home.
- Monitors visitors to the home.
- Documents all services in the electronic case management system daily.
- Works cooperatively and respectfully with the entire support team.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or IEP, with at least 1 year of experience working in the field of intellectual/developmental disabilities. Exceptions may be made for less than 1 year experience with enhanced supervision by a Qualified Professional until the year is obtained.
- Medication Administration Certification is preferred but required by the end of the introductory period.
- Must pass all required trainings and new hire orientation classes.
- Maintain current certifications and trainings required by CMS or relevant governmental entities.
- Computer skills for documentation.
- Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills.
- Problem-solving ability.
- Pass relevant local and state background checks and drug testing requirements.
- Bilingual in any language is a plus.
