About the role
This role is a Senior Research Engineer position within the HPE Quantum team at HPE Labs, focusing on Quantum Error Correction (QEC). The role is hybrid, with an expectation of working 2 days per week from an HPE office.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate quantum error correction strategies to find those that have the best ability to make it possible to run applications on quantum hardware.
- Develop improvements to quantum error correction strategies, algorithms, and software.
- Influence HPC-QC architectural decisions with detailed knowledge of quantum error correction strategies.
- Create and demonstrate novel quantum error correction components and describe these in publications and presentations.
- Develop software components to handle the QEC details in quantum circuit compilation, emulation/simulation, and resource estimation.
- Develop or integrate realtime decoder technologies into HPE’s HPC-QC software stack.
Requirements
- PhD degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics with a strong preference for quantum computing, computational science, or ML/AI expertise.
- 10 or more years of programming experience.
- 1 or more years of experience implementing software for quantum error correction (resource estimation, real-time decoding, circuit compilation).
- Advanced programming skills in low-level languages such as C, C++, or Rust.
- Advanced programming skills in Python.
- Experience contributing to large software projects and creating new software efforts.
- Experience using Linux command line tools.
- Experience with library API design.
- Experience creating or extending quantum computing tools (e.g., Qiskit, CUDA-Q, TensorFlow Quantum, Pennylane).
- Deep understanding of Quantum Computing and skills in understanding and optimizing circuits.
- Deep understanding of Quantum Error Correction codes including circuit compilation and decoding aspects.
- Strong mathematical background, with excellent skills in areas such as statistics, probability, linear algebra.
- Creative and analytical thinking abilities, with a passion for solving complex problems.
- Strong consensus-building skills.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of conveying complex ideas clearly and engaging with both technical and non-technical audiences, in both written form and in presentations.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of applications of quantum computing, including quantum chemistry or other quantum simulation.
- Programming experience in high-performance computing (HPC) environments.
- Experience with cloud computing platforms, GPU computing, or FPGA computing.
- Experience with performance debugging and tuning.
- Experience with AI/ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch).
- Experience developing client/server software with TCP/IP or UDP.
- Experience managing of open-source projects.
- Solid understanding of machine learning algorithms and generative AI.
- Solid understanding of quantum computing algorithms, computational physics, quantum many-body systems, quantum chemistry, material science, combinatorial optimization, or statistical physics.
- Strong track record of sharing findings with the broader scientific community, e.g., publishing research papers in top-tier journals and conferences.
