HPC Software Engineer

About the role
Patriot is looking to add a mid-level High Performance Computing (HPC) Software Engineer to our Space team. You will provide Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)/SE Linux-based HPC services throughout the lifecycle—computational requirements, architecture, acquisition, and operations—for federal government customers. The program delivers key supercomputing capabilities to solve critical problems in science and technology, involving cutting-edge HPC technologies to ensure scientists and engineers can fully utilize modern HPC systems.
As an active member of the Technical User Support (TUS) team, you will collaborate with the TUS team lead, program Chief Scientist, customers, users, and site staff while on-site with a specific R&D customer. The TUS team focuses on reducing "time to science" by working closely with HPC users to port, optimize, and parallelize codes. You will mentor junior team members, provide technical guidance, conduct code-review sessions, and offer career-development advice. Additionally, you will design and deliver training workshops, tutorials, and documentation to help end-users and internal staff adopt HPC tools, best-practice coding standards, and performance-tuning techniques.
This on-site position supports a specific customer’s workflow, modeling and simulation, and data requirements. You will work with the program Chief Scientist, TUS team lead, and others to design and implement solutions, conduct system performance analysis through benchmarking and tuning, and address scientific modeling, numerical processes, and software issues. You will also help users adapt to a production shared resource, its scheduling system, and high-performance data storage systems.
Responsibilities
- Provide lifecycle HPC services on RHEL/SE Linux for computational requirements, architecture, acquisition, and operations.
- Work with HPC users to port, optimize, and parallelize codes to meet their requirements.
- Mentor junior members of the TUS and broader HPC teams, offering technical guidance, code reviews, and career-development advice.
- Design and deliver training workshops, tutorials, and documentation on HPC tools, coding standards, and performance-tuning techniques.
- Collaborate with the program Chief Scientist, TUS team lead, and others to design and implement solutions for customer workflows, modeling, simulation, and data requirements.
- Conduct system performance analysis through benchmarking, tuning libraries, and addressing scientific modeling and numerical processes.
- Investigate, analyze, and recommend solutions for user codes and HPC software issues.
- Help users adapt to a production shared resource, its scheduling system, and high-performance data storage systems.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM-related discipline with a solid mathematics and/or physics background.
- Minimum of 10 years of professional experience.
- Around 5 years of experience developing and using modeling and simulation software in heterogeneous, multi-platform environments.
- Experience with HPC users' workflows for modeling/simulation problems and GUIs.
- Knowledge of High Performance Computing (HPC) environments and related technologies.
- Proficiency in Fortran, C, and/or C++.
- Proficiency in BASH and Korn shell scripting.
- Linux operating system proficiency, including troubleshooting end-user computer system problems independently in a lab environment.
- Strong understanding of software practices such as coding standards, unit testing, and configuration management.
- Ability to analyze, debug, and maintain the integrity of existing codebases.
- Experience designing and delivering training workshops, tutorials, or onboarding materials for HPC users and internal staff.
- Active Top Secret/SCI clearance with a CI Poly (required to start).
- U.S. citizenship (required for security clearance).

Pay
The annual base salary range for this position in California, Massachusetts, New York (excluding most major metropolitan areas), Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, Vermont, Washington, or Washington DC is $134,000 - $236,325.
Schedule
- Full-time, on-site at a customer facility.
- Standard Monday to Friday, 40-hour work week.
