HOUSING ASSOCIATE- Per Diem

About the Role

Under general supervision, this position establishes and maintains a safe and supportive environment for staff and residents of a shelter for individuals. It effectively supports ongoing and collaborative communication amongst all program staff and is responsible for ensuring a trauma‑informed care environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversees operation of the residence.
• Conducts intakes for individuals entering the residence.
• Acts as liaison with other community service providers and referral sources.
• Provides information and referral service for telephone inquiries.
• Supervises preparation of meals by residents (in the absence of a cook) to assure sanitation and nutritional standards are met.
• Provides crisis intervention and conflict management to residents.
• Maintains record‑keeping responsibilities, including client census and database system.
• Notifies the Residence Manager of any emergency situations immediately.
• Assists with providing support and direction for both clients and volunteers engaged in program activities.
• Completes incident reports within one hour of an occurrence, including detailed client behaviors, observations, identification of involved parties, and proper notifications.
• Documents shift or client observations/activities as outlined by communication‑log procedures.
• Ensures all clients meet with onsite medical providers to confirm they are free of health problems that could pose a risk to others.
• Monitors facility and resident activities to ensure safety; conducts hourly rounds, inspections, and overnight visual checks as needed.
• Reports serious incidents or violations to the Residence Manager.
• Verifies presence of all clients and completes sign‑in/out sheets accurately.
• Assists the Residence Manager when needed.
• Engages the security system to maintain safety and security of the premises.
• Notifies the Residence Manager, Program Manager, or Department Director of client discharges.
• Maintains safety, organization, and cleanliness of the residence during shift.
• Performs laundry, room preparation, and housekeeping tasks as needed.
• Conducts monthly fire drills.
• Carries out emergency procedures to ensure safety of residents and staff when required.
• Participates in relevant agency meetings and trainings.
• Actively pursues professional development through reading, supervision, in‑service training, and attendance at conferences and workshops.
• Supports the agency’s Mission, Vision, Values, and Strategic Plan, including core competency initiatives such as collaboration, community focus, innovation, entrepreneurship, cultural competence, and diversity.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Education: Associate degree in Human Services or a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
• Credentials: Valid and clean NYS driver’s license.
• Experience: Minimum two years in the human services field, crisis intervention, residential setting, or emergency services; knowledge of homeless client issues and conflict‑resolution techniques preferred.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

The role frequently requires sitting, talking, hearing, standing, walking, and using hands to type and perform light lifting. Vision requirements include close, distance, and focus adjustment. The work environment is usually quiet.

Pay

Salary: $19.25 – $19.75 per hour.
