About the role
The Kentucky School for the Deaf ensures that deaf and hard of hearing children and youth in Kentucky have educational opportunities to develop their potential to become educated, life-long learners and productive citizens. In partnership with families, local school districts and other services providers, KSD functions as a statewide education center where students come first.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a supervisor for students in the dormitory program, ensuring accountability for their whereabouts, safety, and welfare.
- Provide care, active engagement, and supervision to a unit of residential students at the Kentucky School for the Deaf.
- Interpret, explain, and enforce school policies and regulations and dorm guidelines or rules.
- Plan and implement educational programs to reinforce life skills and ASL/English mastery, striving to provide the best language accessible learning environment.
- Collect data, materials, and ideas for dorm activities, create word walls, gather photos for web page, bulletin boards, craft projects, etc.
- Inspect and maintain dorm appearance with emphasis on safety and an environment conducive to student development.
- Maintain cleanliness of rooms, clothing, etc., ensuring students complete cleaning duties such as making beds, cleaning trash cans, doing laundry, etc.
- Provide necessary care for sick students.
- Decorate seasonally, providing homelike touches.
- Monitor and guide students in appropriate table manners and eating habits.
- Supervise each dorm floor to ensure adherence to the time schedule.
- Guide students in appropriate personal hygiene, including cleanliness, hair care, and personal appearance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
One year of experience working with individuals in an instructional or institutional setting.
Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
American Sign Language (ASL) skills.
Minimum Requirements
- No formal education required.
- One year of experience working with individuals in an instructional or institutional setting.

Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in a school dormitory setting.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
