Housekeeping Aide - Perioperative Services

About the role

Under supervision and following established procedures, performs a variety of heavy cleaning duties to maintain the hospital in an orderly, sanitary, and attractive condition for patients, personnel, and visitors. Responsibilities

  • Undergo classroom and on-the-job training for floor, carpet, upholstery, waste disposal, operating room, and chemical handling procedures; learn proper operation and cleaning of E.S.D. equipment.
  • Shampoo carpets, upholstery, and refinish floors following E.S.D. procedures using manual and motorized devices.
  • Dust high vents, lights, pipes, lockers, ceilings, and wash window glass throughout the hospital complex using ladders or other safety devices.
  • Clean miscellaneous items such as wastebaskets, television sets, fans, and rubber mats.
  • Wash and disinfect all sinks, toilets, floors, urinals, bedpan racks, bathtubs, and showers in hospital lavatories.
  • Service and refill all soap and paper dispensers.
  • Wash walls either manually or using mechanical devices.
  • Prepare burn and Radiation (I-131) rooms by laying protective covering.
  • Clean, wash, and disinfect beds, mattresses, and sleeping carts from top to bottom throughout the hospital.
  • Pick up and dispose of rubbish and soiled linen from patient floors; transport to laundry or place in rubbish truck as appropriate.
  • Remove rubbish from chute rooms, transport heavy rubbish via trash carts for disposal, box waste (including chemo waste), and make chemical pick-ups when needed.
  • Wash rubbish chute rooms top to bottom with a pressure sprayer.
  • Wash rubbish trucks using a truck washer or manually with a water hose; perform minor services such as replacing screws and greasing wheels.
  • Operate bailer equipment for bailing boxes and transporting recycle totes to trailers.
  • Wash or spot clean walls, polish woodwork, furniture, brass fittings, stainless steel elevator doors, kick plates, etc.
  • Remove and transport animal waste and soiled linens to rubbish truck.
  • Transport mattresses, office and patient room furniture (including beds, cribs, folding tables) as necessary.
  • Assist nursing personnel in moving beds and patient furniture.
  • Clean dirt, snow, and salt from sidewalks and entrances using manual or powered equipment; clean entrance mats and apply salt as needed.
  • Assist Facilities Management grounds crew during inclement weather.
  • Change cubicle curtains and draperies; remove, wash, and repair window blinds.
  • Clean construction areas from top to bottom after renovations.
  • Carry and use a beeper or two-way radio upon request.
  • Assist supply clerks in supply or equipment rooms.
  • Service batteries on all battery-operated devices.
  • Set up conference rooms for meetings and events.
  • Perform supply clerk duties during their absence.
  • Take laundry linen inventory by physically counting pieces and documenting results.
  • Perform Housekeeping Aide I and Laundry Aide II duties as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or group leader.

Requirements

  • Ability to follow instructions and observe safety precautions.
  • Ability to prepare solutions according to procedure.
  • Ability to assemble cleaning equipment such as mops, dusters, vacuum cleaners, mop buckets, and ringers.
  • Ability to read, write, understand, and speak English, as well as count numbers.
  • Ability to operate, control, and clean motorized and manual equipment required for E.S.D. tasks.
  • Ability to perform all duties safely and professionally in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Physical ability to lift, carry, or push equipment such as floor buffers, wet vacuums, wall-washing machines, automatic floor-washing machines, carpet cleaning equipment, rubbish carts, and linen carts; transport patients and office furniture; climb ladders; and shovel snow.

Qualifications

Experience: At least one to three months of on-the-job training plus formal and ongoing classroom training.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Continuous walking, standing, carrying, and pushing trash carts weighing up to 400 pounds.
  • Stooping, lifting, climbing ladders and stairs, and heavy lifting.
  • Exposure to unpleasant odors, contaminated items, and strong cleaning solutions.
  • Some hazards from improperly disposed needles and glass (minimized with adherence to safety precautions).
  • Exposure to all types of weather conditions.

Pay

Pay Range: $20.92 - $21.88 per hour

Schedule

Work Type: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM, every other weekend and holidays

Work Shift: Day
