Hospital Veterinarian
About the role
We are seeking a Veterinarian to join our Vetco Total Care Full Service Veterinary Hospitals. This role is the most immersive position in the hospital, where you will live and breathe quality in the pets you treat and the people you work with. You will be supported by quality equipment (ultrasound in every hospital, heated hydraulic surgery tables, DDXR), quality supportive medical field leaders, and a paraprofessional team encouraged to expand their skill sets as subject matter experts in dentistry, nutrition, and more.
As a hospital veterinarian, you will lead your team through the next generation of full-service veterinary care, ensuring:

Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions
- Provide excellent patient care by performing physical examinations, diagnosing and treating diseases, and providing preventive care according to patient signalment, lifestyle, and environment.
- Utilize a problem-based approach, including developing a complete problem list, differential diagnoses, diagnostic plans, and appropriate treatments based on test results.
- Document all patient observations, exam findings, diagnostics, treatments, client interactions, and diagnoses in the medical record concisely and in detail.
- Perform routine and complex surgical procedures, including spays/neuters, abdominal exploratory, and mass removals.
- Perform routine and complex dental procedures, including full dental examinations, evaluation of dental radiographs, and simple/complex extractions.
- Develop treatment plans for hospitalized patients and transition them to overnight care as needed, ensuring continuity of care with referral hospitals.
Other Duties
- Participate in rounds as the incoming or exiting doctor at the beginning and end of shifts.
- Disseminate knowledge throughout the staff to improve the level of care and communication for both patients and clients.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Supervision and Collaboration
In patient care activities, the Veterinarian will take direction from the Hospital Medical Leader or Area Medical Director while upholding Petco Veterinary SOPs. Feedback on patient decisions will be provided to elevate care. All hospital veterinarians are expected to work collegially and behave professionally.
Requirements
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.
- Active licensure as a veterinarian without contingencies in the state where the hospital is located (or ability to obtain by start date).
- Current DEA license.
- Current Controlled Substance License (if applicable) in the state where the hospital is located (or ability to obtain by start date).
- USDA Category I (minimum) Accreditation or completion within two months of hire.
- Comfort performing anesthesia and routine surgeries, including canine/feline spays, neuters, mass removals, and dentals.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Compassionate, professional demeanor during emotional or stressful situations.
- Strong telephone and computer skills.
- Team player willing to learn new techniques, offer creative ideas, and adapt to change.
Work Environment
The majority of duties are conducted in the Vetco Total Care veterinary hospital. The role requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds), and standing for long periods. A significant amount of time will be spent in direct contact with clients and their pets.
Regular communication with clients, veterinary specialists, and service/product providers is required.
Pay
Salary Range: $79,700.00 - $169,200.00. Actual pay rates depend on factors such as position, location, experience, and applicable state or local minimum wage laws. If the regulatory minimum wage exceeds the indicated range, it will be the minimum applied.
