Approximate salary range: $3,584.67 - $4,357.19 per month. This recruitment is for multiple full-time vacancies at San Joaquin General Hospital and to establish an eligible list for future openings.

Responsibilities

  • Set up charts for new patients; maintain patient records.
  • Transcribe physicians' orders; prepare laboratory, x-ray, pharmacy, and related requisitions.
  • Chart patients' vital signs and check charts to ensure physicians' orders are followed.
  • Answer telephones; provide routine information to patients, visitors, hospital staff, and others; take and relay messages; operate paging system.
  • Greet visitors and direct them to proper areas.
  • Assist in admission, transfer, and dismissal of patients; manage patients' valuables, clothing, and personal effects.
  • Monitor and requisition supplies, including clerical, linen, pharmaceutical, and housekeeping supplies.
  • May pick up and deliver laboratory reports or other documents; run errands and transport patients.
  • Operate office equipment, including computer terminals; type memoranda or reports from copy or rough draft.

Requirements

  • One year of clerical experience involving substantial public contact in a hospital, doctor’s office, or medical clinic.
  • One year of business training in an approved school or training program may substitute for six months of the required experience.

Skills

  • Knowledge of clerical practices and procedures, telephone etiquette, business English and arithmetic.
  • Familiarity with basic hygiene and health standards, common physical illnesses and symptoms, and medical terminology.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures in exact detail.
  • Maintain patient records and reports; type memoranda and reports; operate office equipment, including computer terminals.
  • React calmly and efficiently in emergency situations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Utilize effective public and guest relations techniques.
  • Speak clearly and distinctly in a well-modulated, pleasant voice.
  • Work effectively under pressure.

  • Life Insurance:
    • 1 but less than 3 years of service: $1,000

    • 5 but less than 10 years of service: $5,000
    • 10+ years of service: $10,000
    Employees may purchase additional term life insurance at the group rate.
  • 125 Flexible Benefits Plan: Voluntary program allowing pre-tax dollars for health-related expenses (Health Flexible Spending Account: $2,550 annual limit with $500 carryover) and dependent care costs (Dependent Care Assistance Plan: $5,000 annual limit).
  • Retirement Plan: Covered by the County Retirement Law of 1937. Visit SJCERA for details.
  • Deferred Compensation: Plan under Section 457 of the IRS code. Annual contribution limit: $22,500 (or 100% of includible compensation, whichever is less). Individuals age 50+ may contribute up to $30,000. Roth IRA (after-tax) also available.
  • Vacation:
    • Up to 3 years: 10 days/year
    • After 3 years: 15 days/year
    • After 10 years: 20 days/year
    • After 20 years: 23 days/year
  • Holidays: 14 paid holidays per year (effective July 1, 2017).
  • Sick Leave: 12 working days annually with unlimited accumulation. Eligible for 8 hours of administrative leave if leave balance equals at least half of cumulative accrual and employee is on payroll for the entire calendar year.
  • Bereavement Leave: 3 days of paid leave for the death of a qualifying family member; 2 additional days of accrued leave for death of employee’s spouse, domestic partner, parent, or child.
  • Merit Salary Increase: New employees start at the first step of the salary range. Eligible for a merit increase to the next step after 52 weeks (2,080 hours) on each step.
  • Educational Reimbursement Program: Up to $850 per fiscal year for career-related coursework. Up to $800 per semester ($1,600 max per fiscal year) for approved 4-year college/university programs.
  • Parking Supplemental: County contributes up to $20 per pay period for employees who pay for parking and work in the Downtown Core Area.
  • School Activities Leave: Up to 40 hours per year (max 8 hours/month) to participate in children’s school activities.
