Hospital Lab Technician 1

About the Role

This position supports the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine's purpose through timely and accurate specimen receipt, accessioning, preparation, processing, and shipping for analysis on various body fluids, tissues, and fecal material, primarily in the Clinical Pathology Sendouts Lab. Additional functions include equipment and general maintenance, supply inventory and ordering, clerical duties, and quality assurance in the pre-analytical area of the clinical laboratory.

Responsibilities

• 60% - Sendouts Function: Handle specimen receipt, accessioning, preparation, processing, and shipping for analysis.
• 20% - Quality Assurance and Compliance: Ensure adherence to policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• 10% - Area Maintenance/Inventory Management: Manage equipment, supplies, and inventory.
• 10% - Clerical Duties: Perform administrative tasks supporting laboratory operations.

Requirements

• Experience in accurate specimen receipt, accessioning, preparation, processing, and shipping.
• Knowledge of laboratory specimen handling, processing, storage, and shipping requirements.
• Proficiency in computer systems such as EMR, email, hospital Incident Reporting systems (e.g., RL Solutions), and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Familiarity with LIS for specimen inquiry, batching, test cancellation, and printing orders/labels.
• Ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
• Adequate familiarity with medical terminology.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.

• Preferred: Experience in a Clinical Pathology Sendout Lab.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a large, diverse, multi-site department dedicated to creating a healthier world through innovation in patient care, population health, education, technology, and research. Our laboratories are licensed by the State of California, certified by CLIA, and accredited by CAP, AABB, and FACT. We operate in three facilities: Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion (SESP), Pathology Building, and the Specialty Testing Center (STC). As one of UCDMC's largest ancillary services departments, we emphasize high-quality, cost-effective, and innovative diagnostic and therapeutic care.

Pay

Salary Range: $40.04-$49.76 per hour

Schedule

Shift: 2:00 PM - 10:30 PM
Location: Surgery & Emergency Services Pavilion (HSP010)
Union Representation: EX-Patient Care Technical
Percentage of Time: 100% on-site

Physical Demands

Work Environment

Smoke and tobacco-free campus. Must be able to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and variable shifts for 24-hour coverage. This is a critical position requiring a criminal background check, drug screening, and compliance with mandated reporter policies.
