About the Role
As a Hospital Based Patient Advocate, you play a vital role in guiding uninsured hospital patients through the complex landscape of medical and disability assistance. This onsite, hospital-based role places you at the heart of patient financial advocacy—meeting individuals face-to-face, right in their hospital rooms, to guide them through the process of identifying eligibility and applying for financial assistance. Your presence and empathy make a real difference during some of life’s most vulnerable moments.
The purpose of this position is to connect uninsured hospital patients to programs that will cover their medical expenses. You will evaluate eligibility for federal, state, and county medical or disability assistance programs through bedside visits and in-person interactions, guiding patients through the application process to ensure thorough completion and follow-up. This role is crucial in ensuring that 98% of uninsured patients are screened at bedside.
Responsibilities
- Screen uninsured hospital patients at bedside to determine eligibility for federal, state, and/or county medical or disability assistance.
- Complete appropriate applications and follow through until approval.
- Provide detailed, accurate, and timely documentation in both Elevate PFS and hospital systems for all cases worked.
- Maintain exceptional customer service skills at all times.
- Manage an assigned work queue of patient accounts.
- Collaborate with hospital staff, case managers, social workers, and financial counselors through in-person and written correspondence.
- Answer incoming calls, make outbound calls, and track all paperwork necessary for enrollment and renewal of prospective Medicaid patients.
- Maintain structured and timely contact with applicants and government agencies, assisting with gathering additional reports or records, meeting appointments, and arranging transportation if needed.
- Conduct in-person community visits as needed to acquire documentation.
- Inform clients promptly of all approvals and denials of coverage as per established protocols.
- Attend ongoing required training to stay informed about current rules and regulations related to governmental programs.
- Ensure regular and timely attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Some college coursework preferred.
- Prior hospital experience preferred.
- Adaptability when dealing with constantly changing processes, computer systems, and government programs.
- Professional experience working with state and federal programs.
- Critical thinking skills.
- Ability to maneuver throughout the hospital and patients’ rooms during the scheduled work shift.
- Proficient experience utilizing Microsoft Office Suite, with emphasis on Excel and Outlook.
- Effective oral and written communication skills for a variety of individuals.
- Ability to multitask to meet performance metrics in a fast-paced environment.
- Compliance with the hospital’s dress code.

Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM.
