About the Role

Hebrew SeniorLife Hospice is designed to provide a Jewish Hospice service to terminally ill patients and their families in the greater Boston area. Rooted in Hessed (loving kindness) and Kevod HaBeriyot (honoring life), the Hospice is open to anyone regardless of religious affiliation. Our mission is informed by Jewish values shared across many faith traditions and spiritual belief systems. The Hospice works collaboratively with patients and families in the final months, weeks, and days of life, aiming to achieve optimum healing of body and soul when curing is no longer an option. This includes helping with physical comfort, emotional and spiritual support, and companionship, with the goal of ensuring a peaceful and pain-free death and supporting family healing and bereavement.

This is an exciting opportunity to join at the ground level and help build an innovative new Hospice program poised for clinical excellence and rapid growth. The Hospice completes the continuum of outstanding care delivered by Hebrew SeniorLife, an integrated, eight-site system of healthcare, housing, research, and teaching serving thousands of seniors in the Greater Boston area and beyond. As a member of the interdisciplinary group (IDG), the Hospice Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care to patients, identifying needs and delivering supportive care in accordance with the attending physician’s orders, the IDG plan of care, and Hospice policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Assume responsibility for a patient visit or on-call schedule, including assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating phases of the nursing process.
• Provide Hospice nursing care focused on pain control and symptom management based on systematic assessment.
• Initiate communication with attending physicians, other Hospice staff, and agencies to coordinate care and resources for the patient/family.
• Develop and assess an individualized, comprehensive plan of care in partnership with the Interdisciplinary Group (IDG) and in accordance with Hospice regulations.
• Perform comprehensive assessments, supervise hospice aides, and oversee hospice services in assisted living, LTC, SNF, and hospital settings.
• Maintain regular communication with the Clinical Director and attending physician/medical director regarding patient/family needs.
• Document patient records accurately and timely, reflecting changes in care plans and services rendered.
• Teach, supervise, and counsel patients/families on physical care, comfort, and coping with terminal conditions.
• Provide support at the time of death and during bereavement.
• Participate in IDG conferences, share caseload issues, and facilitate staff discussions for professional growth.
• Supervise Hospice Aides, review their plans of care every 14 days, and address any concerns with the Clinical Director.
• Share in providing 24/7 on-call coverage for patients/families, including evenings and weekends.
• Demonstrate clinical knowledge and skills in hospice and end-of-life care, with a commitment to ongoing training in pain and symptom management.

Requirements

• Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing; BSN preferred.
• Current, unrestricted Massachusetts Registered Nurse license.
• Minimum of six months of experience as an RN in an acute care setting or as required by state regulations; one year of RN experience required.
• Hospice experience strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to assess and respond to patient/family needs in varied settings and cope with emotional stress.
• Ability to function with minimal supervision and maintain professional relationships with patients and families.
• Commitment to maintaining clinical skills and adhering to Hospice policies and procedures.
• Reliable transportation, valid Massachusetts driver’s license, and ability to travel to multiple locations in a workday.

Physical Requirements

Must pass an Occupational Health Clearance.

Pay

$78,576.07 - $117,864.10 per year.
