Hospice Medical Director — Albuquerque & Santa Fe, NM
About the Role
We are an established hospice serving patients and families throughout the Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico areas and are seeking a compassionate, dependable physician to join our team as Hospice Medical Director. This is an excellent opportunity for a physician interested in hospice and palliative care who is looking for a flexible medical leadership role that can be performed primarily remotely.
Responsibilities
- Review new hospice admissions and clinical documentation for appropriateness of hospice diagnosis and eligibility
- Complete, review, and sign Certifications of Terminal Illness (CTIs) and required recertifications
- Review and approve medication and treatment orders as appropriate
- Provide physician oversight and clinical guidance to the hospice team
- Participate in interdisciplinary team (IDT) meetings
- Collaborate with nursing and clinical leadership regarding patient care needs
- Share rotating after-hours emergency call coverage with our Alternate Medical Director
- Support compliance with Medicare hospice requirements and applicable state and federal regulations
Schedule & Work Arrangement
This is a primarily remote position offering flexibility for a physician who maintains another clinical practice. Routine physical presence at the hospice office is not required. The Medical Director should be accessible and responsive when physician review, clinical guidance, or approval is needed. After-hours emergency coverage is shared with an Alternate Medical Director, so the Medical Director is not solely responsible for after-hours call. Our current hospice census is approximately 40 patients.
Qualifications
- MD or DO
- Active and unrestricted New Mexico medical license
- Physician in good standing
- Strong clinical judgment and communication skills
- Dependable and responsive to the hospice clinical team
- Hospice, palliative care, geriatrics, internal medicine, or family medicine experience preferred
- Previous hospice medical director experience preferred, but not required for the right candidate
