Histotechnologist - Pathology Research - 40 hrs - Days -

About the Role

Under general supervision and following established procedures, prepares specimens of tissue for microscopic evaluation by a physician to provide information on the functioning of tissues and organs and other details relative to the cause and progress of disease. Prepares dyes and chemical solutions, processes frozen sections, and performs related duties.

Responsibilities

• Performs processing, testing, and reporting without direct supervision following successful completion of competency testing.
• Obtains surgical specimens and orients them on a supporting medium according to diagrams provided by the physician.
• Places specimens in a cryostat, cuts thin sections, and mounts them on glass slides.
• Stains microscopic slides and covers them with resin and a cover glass for protection and preservation.
• Maintains slide files by patient’s chemosurgery or biopsy number, name, medical record number, diagnosis, and slide location.
• Decalcifies bone specimens and processes bone marrow specimens.

Requirements

• Completion of an accredited bachelor’s degree program in chemical, physical, biological science, medical technology, or clinical laboratory science, and successful completion of a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program.
• OR a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university and one of the following:
  • 1 year of full-time acceptable clinical experience in a histopathology laboratory or 1 year of research experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S. or Canada.
  • HT(ASCP) certification and 6 months of full-time acceptable clinical experience in a histopathology laboratory or 6 months of research experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S. or Canada.
  • Successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military histotechnician training course.
• At least one year of supervised training in a clinical laboratory in histologic techniques to perform tissue staining procedures and bone marrow specimen processing is preferred.

Qualifications

Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a histotechnologist is preferred.
