Histotechnologist (HTL) - Pathology General Histology

Position Summary

The Histotechnologist (HTL) is to be competent in every aspect of Histology and be able to act in the place of the supervisor when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and perform specialized histologic staining procedures.
  • Prepare tissue specimens including proper tissue fixation, embedding, slicing (using various types of microtomes) and mounting sections on glass slides for microscopic evaluation.
  • Assist with the fixation of tissue using special techniques and perform a variety of specialized chemical and immunohistochemical stains using appropriate controls.
  • Maintain records of prepared specimens: label stained and finished slides; examine sample of stained slides with microscope to ascertain results; prepare solutions and reagents in accordance with standard procedures; record number of blocks handled and number of slides prepared; file tissue blocks checking to ensure each is appropriately labeled.
  • Responsible for instrument maintenance on all equipment in the Histology Laboratory. Maintain necessary supplies.
  • Maintain and revise procedure manual as necessary.
  • Absorb and assist with Cytology specimen preparation.
  • Maintain the quality of service in the laboratory consistent with CAP and JCAHO standards by using the established and current principles of specimen collection and preparation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and acts in the place of the Histology Supervisor when necessary.
  • Receive, accession, and label surgical specimens accurately and maintain an accurate log of specimens using the lab computer.
  • Assist with gross examination of tissue including labeling and preparing tissue blocks.
  • Assist with frozen sections and maintain Gross Rooms and Frozen Section Rooms in a clean and orderly manner and ensures all are adequately stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Store and dispose of tissue specimens as required by CAP.
  • Assist with specimen photography as needed.
  • Perform duties using safe practices as outlined in the Department Safety Manual.
  • Prepare worklists and slides as appropriate.
  • Load the tissue processor.

Requirements

40 hours per week
Monday - Friday (6 am - 2:30 pm) with rotational weekends
Required to work other shifts per operational demand needs
