Responsibilities
- Receive and process specimens from all sources, including accessioning computer, identification and labeling of individual specimens, ensuring specimens meet established acceptance criteria.
- Assist Pathologist in sectioning frozen sections within 15 minutes, requiring special skill of manual dexterity and operation of the cryostat.
- Embed all surgical, autopsy and research specimens, demonstrating in-depth knowledge of gross tissue identification and correct orientation into paraffin blocks.
- Cut thin 2-4 micron sections of tissue using a microtome, showcasing superior manual dexterity and visual acuity.
- Stain slides routine and special stains, requiring visual acuity and specialized knowledge of staining principles.
- Prepare solutions as needed for various procedures.
- Coverslip slides using an automated instrument, focusing on concentration and attention to detail to avoid errors.
- Perform Quality Control/Quality Assurance, ensuring the delicate nature of the job is thoroughly monitored and documented.
- File slides and paraffin blocks for future reference and easy retrieval, including off-campus travel for consultations and conferences.
- Perform specialized procedures such as Bone Marrow assistance, Immunohistochemistry, and Leukemia stains, preparing solutions as needed.
- Conduct research and development on new procedures, contributing to ongoing advancements in histotechnology.
Requirements
- High School or GED (Required)
- HT - Histotechnician Registered - American Society for Clinical Pathology
- Two to three years post-high school training
- Two to three years previous experience
- Three to six months time on the job
