Duties * Prepare tissue specimens of varying sizes and conditions from throughout the body for diagnostic examination by a pathologist.* Assist pathologists during specimen cutting and determine appropriate methods for preparing tissue for microscopic examination.* Operate complex immunohistochemical staining systems to produce targeted immunostains.* Freeze, cut (cryotomy), and stain tissue for intraoperative rapid diagnosis.* Plan and organize day-to-day responsibilities within the histology section.* Maintain organized files of pathology materials, including slides, blocks, and tissues. Qualifications Applicants must qualify through specialized experience, education, or a combination of both. Specialized Experience:One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level that includes: * Assisting pathologists during specimen cutting.* Determining appropriate tissue preparation methods for microscopic analysis.* Preparing tissue specimens of varying sizes and conditions for diagnostic examination.* Troubleshooting, adjusting, and performing minor repairs on cryostats. OR Education:One full year of graduate-level education in a field directly related to the position, such as Biology, Chemistry, or Microbiology. Transcripts must be submitted when qualifying based on education. OR Combination of Education and Experience:A qualifying combination of graduate education and specialized experience totaling at least 100% of the qualification requirement. Certification Histotechnician HT(ASCP) certification or Histotechnologist HTL(ASCP) certification through the ASCP Board of Certification must be obtained within 6 months of employment. Applicants do not need to already hold HT/HTL certification at the time of appointment, provided certification is obtained within the required six-month period. Work Schedule The position is primarily day shift, Monday through Friday, with no weekends or holidays under normal operations. Irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, or varying schedules, may occasionally be required to fulfill mission requirements. The position is designated Mission Essential, meaning the employee may be required to report to or remain at work during severe weather or other circumstances affecting normal operations.
