Histology Technologist II

Job Summary: Monday‑Friday, 11 am – 7:30 pm. Responsible for preparing tissue specimens by processing, embedding, performing microtomy, and mounting tissue sections on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis. Responsible for training new staff, troubleshooting issues, and escalating concerns to the Senior Technologist or Supervisor as needed. This position does not require patient care.

Responsibilities

• Train new technologists and technicians on proper procedures and techniques.
• Evaluate new technology for clinical application and assist with updating procedure manuals for laboratory inspections and accreditation.
• Troubleshoot issues and escalate concerns to Senior Technologists or Supervisors as necessary.
• Process, embed, and section tissue for microscopic examination.
• Embed complex cases that deviate from routine embedding procedures.
• Perform specialized histologic procedures, including nerve testing, enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and other advanced techniques.
• Perform frozen sections as required.
• Perform preventative maintenance and quality control procedures, including oiling and cleaning microtomes, cleaning tissue processors, and changing staining solutions.
• Ensure appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to maintain employee safety.
• Maintain accurate case identification and ensure appropriate specimen tracking throughout the entire process to support patient safety.
• Follow hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices and maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area.

Requirements

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field (required). Experience cannot be substituted for the degree.
• Licensure/Certification: One of the following is required:
  • Histotechnician [HT(ASCP)] – American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP‑BOC)
  • Histotechnologist [HTL(ASCP)] – American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP‑BOC)
• Experience: 2‑3 years of histology experience required.

Skills

• Fundamental knowledge of basic histotechnique: fixation, decalcification, processing, embedding, and routine staining.
• Ability to troubleshoot issues, train new staff, and manage problems effectively and organized.
• Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills.

Pay

Pay range: $39.11 – $48.84 per hour (Grade 6).

Schedule

Monday‑Friday, 11 am – 7:30 pm; scheduled weekly hours: 40; work shift: Day; work location: Onsite at 275 Charles Street; employee type: Regular.
