Histology technician II - IHC

About the Role

The full-time Histology Technician II will support technical laboratory personnel in day-to-day operations of the Dermatopathology, Histology, and Immunohistology Laboratories in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine. This role involves preparing reagents, receiving and processing patient specimens, performing advanced histopathology procedures, and maintaining laboratory supplies. The incumbent will also serve as a resource for research projects, test validation, and clinical test implementation.

Responsibilities

• Prepare simple and complex reagents or media under direct supervision.
• Receive, accession, and triage patient specimens, blocks, and slides.
• Perform high complexity testing and advanced histopathology procedures, including H&E, special stains, Immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescent (IF), and CISH staining.
• Monitor incoming phone inquiries and requests.
• Establish and maintain courteous, cooperative relations with clients and other personnel.
• Identify and separate specimens for referral to outside laboratories or analysis by other USC laboratories.
• Coordinate research projects, test validation, and clinical test implementation activities.
• Handle and dispose of hazardous and non-hazardous materials in accordance with safety protocols.
• Maintain, track, and organize laboratory supplies; monitor inventory levels and order consumables as needed.

Qualifications

• Clear understanding of CAP and KSOM guidelines for Histology laboratory operations.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented.
• Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Proficiency with software such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Requirements

• Minimum Education: Related undergraduate study.
• Minimum Certifications: Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
• Minimum Experience: 3 years.
• Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree.
• Preferred Certifications: ASCP issued Immunohistochemistry (QHIC) certification.
• Preferred Experience: 5 years.

Schedule

Monday–Friday, 2:30 am–11:00 am. (Shift Differential applies)

Pay

The hourly rate range for this position is $38.69 - $49.98. The University of Southern California considers factors such as the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations when extending an offer of employment.
