General Summary
Provides daily management and oversight of technical activities within the Histology department, including embedding, microtomy, immunohistochemistry, special stains, and tissue processing. Provides technical expertise, decision making, and problem-solving skills with in-depth knowledge of histologic techniques.
Principal Job Functions
- Maintains strict adherence to all quality and regulatory standards.
- Ensures proficiency and competency through enforcement of established performance standards and procedural protocols.
- Enforces safety policies and procedures, fostering a positive safety culture and managing incident investigations.
- Develops, updates, and maintains a procedure manual for the department, ensuring compliance with CAP guidelines and other governing bodies.
- Ensures all activities are performed and documented according to established SOPs.
- Prepares for and participates in internal and external audits and inspections by regulatory bodies such as CAP, CLIA, and others.
- Interviews, hires, onboards, trains, and assesses competency of staff, including providing technical instruction and training on techniques, instrumentation, and organization of work.
- Ensures staff are properly trained and maintain competency in all relevant procedures.
- Schedules department staff to ensure efficient workflow and meet turnaround time goals.
- Works closely with staff members and other departments to ensure timely specimen turnouts.
- Performs quality control and quality assurance on instrumentation and reagents used for testing.
- Examines slides under a microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements, investigating for further study and resolution of technical or stain quality abnormalities.
- Plans, organizes, and completes evaluations and validations for new procedures and instrumentation.
Education And Experience
- Bachelor of science degree in a laboratory science or related field required.
- Three (3) years of experience in the histology laboratory required.
- One (1) year of leadership experience preferred.
Other Credentials / Certifications
- Current applicable ASCP certification (Histotechnician (HT), Histotechnologist (HTL), Cytopathology (CT), Pathologists Assistants (PA)) required.
- Member in good standing with the American Society of Clinical Pathology required.
- Maintains 12 CEUs each year.
