This is an in-person, part-time role supporting the YMCA’s youth-development mission by creating a safe, engaging, and inclusive before- and after-school environment for middle-school students.

About the role

The Club Y Advisor delivers age-appropriate enrichment activities—leadership, academic support, arts, and social-emotional learning—while fostering positive behavior and serving as a role model aligned with the YMCA’s core values.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise children and participate in all aspects of the program.
  • Observe and assess children’s behavior; enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures; apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Prepare daily snack and provide homework assistance.
  • Maintain a safe, nurturing environment and build positive relationships with participants and their families.
  • Lead specialty experiences for middle-school students: Art, Active Play & Sport, Music, Teen Leadership, STEM, Social-Emotional Learning (Y-CAP), and College & Career Readiness (Achievers).
  • Use approved curricula and project-based learning strategies to implement activities.
  • Provide active supervision—always know the location of children and never leave them unsupervised.
  • Encourage respect for personal property, program equipment, and facility; keep all areas clean and safe.
  • Assist the Club Y Site Director with sign-in/sign-out procedures.
  • Comply with and enforce all DHS licensing requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Accurately report work time via the approved YMCA clock-in/out method.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old and pass pre-employment background checks, drug screening, and DHS fingerprinting.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous work with middle-school students preferred but not required.
  • Must meet minimum Tennessee Department of Human Services requirements.
  • Willingness to accept and provide supervision and guidance.
  • Ability to manage children’s behavior without physical contact or force.

Certifications

Before starting work, new hires must complete 11 hours of training, including:

  • New Hire Orientation training.
  • DHS Background Disclosure Form & Fingerprint appointment.
  • Abuse Registry Check.
  • DHS Physical health form.
  • Proof of education.
  • Past Employment reference.
  • DHS TCCOTS “Before you Begin” and “Shaken Baby” training (TN program sites).
  • Pre-service training.

Within 30 days of hire, CPR/First Aid/AED (Infant/Pediatric) certification is required; annual training requirements must be maintained.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Climbing, sitting, standing, pushing, walking, kneeling, and stooping.
  • Some exposure to outdoor elements, electrical/mechanical mechanisms, and chemical elements.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Pay

$14.00–$17.00 per hour.

Schedule

Primarily weekdays (Monday through Friday), with occasional evening and weekend hours required for program needs and special events.
