About the role
The Iowa Department of Transportation is seeking a Highway Technician Senior to join our Bridge Crew. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining and repairing Iowa's bridges, ensuring safety for all travelers.
Responsibilities
- Assess bridge conditions and make on-site decisions.
- Coordinate field work and guide the team.
- Follow traffic control standards to keep crews and motorists safe.
- Train local maintenance staff involved in bridge repairs.
- Track bridge damage and follow-up repairs.
- Complete routine maintenance on DOT vehicles and equipment.
- Support roadway and right-of-way maintenance.
- Respond to emergencies and assist with snow and ice removal.
- Use basic computer programs to complete daily tasks.
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Requirements
- A valid Commercial Learner’s Permit upon hire.
- Class A and endorsements/restrictions on your CDL within 5 months following your hire date.
- Entry-level driver training is available upon hire through the Iowa DOT.
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions.
- A pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
- Completion of a comprehensive bridge inspection course required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of or ability to learn bridge terminology/design characteristics and maintenance/repair procedures and techniques.
- Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch as a Highway Technician or Construction Technician.
- Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency, and experience equal to four years of full-time work in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing.

Schedule
Shift: 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Thursday. Hours may vary and subject to call 24 hours a day during emergency and / or weather conditions; occasional overnight travel.
