Duties

Individuals selected must be able to respond to emergency callout within 1 hour during inclement weather, including all snow and ice conditions, to be considered for this position.

  • Perform routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort involving exposure to all kinds of weather conditions.
  • Operate plows during winter operations.
  • Obtain the equipment certifications listed below.
  • Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications

Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1:

  • Must be 18 years old.
  • Pass physical/medical examination and drug test.
  • Possess a Class D Driver License.

Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2:

  • Must be 18 years old.
  • Pass physical/medical examination.
  • Possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction.
  • Candidates will be evaluated on their ability to satisfactorily operate a NYSDOT large dump truck within two weeks of appointment.
  • Failure to pass will result in termination.

Highway Maintenance Worker 1:

  • Satisfactory completion of the Highway Maintenance Worker Traineeship 2 or one year of experience in the operation of highway construction, maintenance equipment, or other vehicles in excess of 26,000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating with air brakes.
  • Possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with DOT-specified endorsements.
  • Two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications: heavy dump truck, one person plowing with single or double wing, and front-end loader.
  • Must satisfactorily complete NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification within the first two weeks of employment.

  • All candidates must pass a pre-employment physical/medical examination and drug test prior to beginning employment.
  • Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment.
  • The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1 position is $48,855.
  • The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 position is $51,058.
  • The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 position is $53,430.
  • The salary range listed reflects the full range for this graded position.
  • The Department will not sponsor a nonimmigrant for a temporary employment visa (H-1B or similar), OPT STEM, or for permanent residence.
  • Offers of permanent employment may not be made to nonimmigrants whose employment authorization is limited to a period of practical training (F-1 or similar).

  • The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1 position is $48,855. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $39,855 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000, specific to this title and location.
  • The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 position is $51,058. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $42,058 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000, specific to this title and location.
  • The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 position is $53,430. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $44,430 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000, specific to this title and location.
  • The salary range listed reflects the full range for this graded position. For new State employees appointed into graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
