Highway Maintenance Worker III: Specialized Equipment Operator (61036723)

Responsibilities

  • Operates specialized equipment that may include Boom Truck, Snooper Truck, Truck Crane, or Crawler Crane.
  • Performs skilled bridge maintenance worker functions and operates heavy equipment such as backhoes, Lowboy Truck Tractors, and Forklifts.
  • Performs skilled manual labor and operates heavy-duty equipment in construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system.
  • Assists with training on the construction and/or maintenance of bridges.
  • May lead a small crew when needed.
  • Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide.
  • Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, including operating medium or heavy-duty equipment, and may require extended working hours or 12-hour shifts.
  • Inspects and operates motorized vehicles and equipment, informing supervisor of necessary repairs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
  • Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirements

  • Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
  • May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
  • Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
  • Work is performed with exposure to roadway traffic, inclement weather, insects, etc.
  • Physical skills include walking, standing, sitting, climbing, reaching, and heavy lifting.
  • Work environment is outdoors in extremely hot and cold temperatures.
  • Due to various repair methods, employee will be required to climb bridge structures and walk on narrow beams at heights exceeding ten feet.
  • Works overtime as necessary.
