Highway Maintenance Worker II - Heavy Equipment Operator (61036691)

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled manual labor and operates heavy equipment such as backhoe, front end loader, and motor grader in construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system.
  • Grading, setting forms, pouring and finishing concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and driveways.
  • Works on shoulders, ditches, drainage structures, and pavement markings.
  • Performs vegetation management using complex mowers and powered hand tools.
  • Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide.
  • Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadways and right-of-ways.
  • Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspections in accordance with Department rules and procedures.
  • Installs and repairs traffic signs, pavement markings, and safety devices such as guardrails.
  • Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, which may include extended working hours or 12-hour shifts.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
  • Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Demands

  • Involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
  • May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather or emergencies.
  • Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
