Highway Maintenance Worker II : Heavy Equipment Operator (61035918)

Responsibilities

• Operates and maintains heavy equipment such as front-end loader, backhoe, excavator, motor grader, etc. used in various road maintenance activities.
• Performs duties including manual labor or operating equipment in maintenance tasks such as:
  • Clearing of right-of-ways
  • Cleaning and grading drainage ditches
  • Repairing shoulders
  • Patching potholes
  • Making base repairs
  • Paving driveways
  • Laying pipes
  • Building catch basins
  • Pouring concrete for curbs, sidewalks, and raised medians
• Operates 5 and 10 yard dump trucks in hauling equipment and construction materials such as concrete pipes, asphalt, dirt, limestone, soil, cement, and debris.
• Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools including chainsaws and pole saws and uses hand tools in various maintenance activities.
• Assists in instructing crew members in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing safety equipment, vehicle safety, and when working with hazardous materials and waste.
• Assists in emergencies and inclement weather operations, which may include working hours outside of normal work schedule. When crew is in an "on-call" status, employee is available 24 hours a day.
• Assists in setting up work zone traffic control to include signs, cones, etc.
• Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, the general public, and equipment.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirements

• The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve:
  • Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
• May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
• Frequently exposed to:
  • Outside environment in all weather conditions
  • Noise
  • Oil or grease on a daily basis
