Responsibilities
- Perform skilled manual labor and operate heavy equipment (backhoe, excavator, slope mower, tractor with boom mower, front-end loader) for construction, repair, and preservation of state highways, including grading, patching, installing driveways, working on shoulders, ditches, drainage structures, and clearing right of way.
- Conduct vegetation management using complex mowers and powered hand tools.
- Coordinate placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide.
- Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations, including operating heavy equipment such as a motor grader.
- May require extended working hours or 12-hour shifts.
Requirements
- One (1) year of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
- Valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement.
Physical Demands
- Perform essential functions involving bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
- May work outside of normal schedule during inclement weather or emergencies.
- Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease.
Schedule
- May require overtime, nighttime, and/or weekend work during hazardous weather or emergencies.
