Highway Maintenance Worker I: Small Equipment Operator (61034043)

Responsibilities

• Operates and maintains small equipment such as tractor with mower, brush chipper, and snow plow used in various phases of road maintenance.
• Performs manual labor duties including clearing right-of-ways, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, repairing bridges, paving driveways, and laying sideline/cross line pipe.
• Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow and protect workers, the public, and equipment.
• Operates 5-yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials, and debris.
• Operates and maintains electric/gas-powered tools including chainsaws and pole saws, and uses hand tools in various phases of roadway maintenance.
• Assists in emergencies and inclement weather operations, which may include working outside of normal work schedule.
• Available 24 hours a day when crew is in an "on-call" status.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirements

• Involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
• May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
• Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
