Highway Maintenance Worker I - Small Equipment Operator (61033617)

Responsibilities

• Performs vegetation management activities using equipment such as a tractor with mower (≤10' wide), brush chipper, chainsaw, and powered tools.
• Operates medium equipment, including a tandem dump truck, for road and bridge maintenance activities in the state highway system.
• Coordinates traffic control device placement to establish and maintain proper work zone safety according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control and Field Guide.
• Performs manual labor to assist with installing and repairing catch basins and other drainage structures.
• Collects litter, debris, and dead animals.
• Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, including availability for extended hours or 12-hour shifts, day or night.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• No minimum training or experience requirements for this classification.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Demands

• Involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Requires walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working near moving traffic, and exposure to natural environmental hazards.
• May require work outside normal scheduled work week, especially during inclement weather.
