Duties
- Respond to emergency callouts within 1 hour during inclement weather.
- Perform routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort involving exposure to all kinds of weather conditions.
- Operate plows during winter operations.
- Obtain the required equipment certifications.
- Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications
Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1:
- Must be 18 years old.
- Pass physical/medical examination and drug test.
- Possess a Class D Driver License.
Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2:
- Must be 18 years old.
- Pass physical/medical examination.
- Possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction.
- Candidates must satisfactorily operate a NYSDOT large dump truck within two weeks of appointment.
Highway Maintenance Worker 1:
- Satisfactory completion of the Highway Maintenance Worker Traineeship 2 or one year of experience in the operation of highway construction, maintenance equipment, or other vehicles in excess of 26,000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating with air brakes.
- Possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with DOT-specified endorsements.
- Two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications: heavy dump truck, one person plowing with single or double wing, and front-end loader.
- Completion of NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification within the first two weeks of employment.

- The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1 is $48,855.
- The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 is $51,058.
- The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 is $53,430.

- All candidates must pass a pre-employment physical/medical examination and drug test prior to beginning employment.
- Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment.
