Highway Maintenance Tech I, II, or III - Sweetwater, TX

About the role

The General Transportation Tech I, II, and III positions are responsible for performing routine to highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work. These roles involve tasks such as roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance, traffic control, and assisting the public during emergencies. Positions require contact with private entities and operate independently on assignments, with unusual issues referred to supervisors.

Responsibilities

• Assists in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts; performs basic welding as needed.
• Supports local law enforcement at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
• Plays a role in traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs, and barricades; flags traffic.
• Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices; inspects barricades to ensure compliance with standards.
• Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers, and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
• Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards, and comfort stations; moves/picks up litter and roadway debris; mows rights-of-way and picnic/rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
• Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower; performs preventive maintenance inspections, routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment.
• Completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI; sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public, and performs other work as directed during emergency situations.
• Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals, and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
• Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems; identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts; performs welding; uses/moves equipment/tools, materials, and products.
• Inspects routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals, and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
• Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine; serves as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
• Trains other employees.

Requirements

• Education: No formal education required.
• Experience:
  • GTT I: No experience required.
  • GTT II: 1 year experience.
  • GTT III: 2 years experience.
• Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
• Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application.
  • Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" endorsement or CDL "A" License within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
• Conditions of Employment: US Military License candidates must successfully obtain Texas Class “A” CDL within 30 days of employment.

  • General Transportation Tech I: A16 ($50,004.00 - $61,129.92/yearly).
