Overview Of Position

This 1-on-1 Special Education Instructional Assistant position is assigned to a 2nd Grade female student in the Extended Resource service pathway. The 1-on-1 Student Support Paraeducator provides individualized academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and communication support to a second-grade student receiving special education services through the Extended Resource Program (ERP). Under the direction of the special education teacher and general education staff, the paraeducator assists the student in accessing grade-level curriculum, completing classroom activities, following daily routines, and participating meaningfully in both special education and general education environments.

Responsibilities

  • Implements accommodations, modifications, and instructional strategies outlined in the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP)
  • Supports the development of independence, self-advocacy, and positive learning behaviors
  • Monitors student progress and collects data as directed by the IEP team
  • Provides consistent behavioral and emotional support throughout the school day
  • Facilitates peer interactions and supports transitions between activities and settings
  • Reinforces social skills and ensures student safety

  • Directs and implements behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders or other conditions
  • Instructs students in individual and group settings across academic subjects, social skills, and daily living skills
  • Maintains instructional materials and student files/records including attendance and adapted projects
  • Monitors students during assigned periods in rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, and parking lots

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent AND at least one of the following:
    • Qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment as published by PESB
    • Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university
    • Seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the one hundred level or higher at an accredited college or university
    • Completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council
  • Valid State of Washington Driver's License or evidence of equivalent mobility
  • Secure Training, CPR, First Aid certification
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint Background Clearance

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of instructional procedures and practices, age-appropriate student activities, safety practices and procedures, conflict resolution, and stages of child development/behavior
  • Ability to perform basic math including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios
  • Ability to read manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and present information to others
  • Ability to understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions
  • Skill in adhering to safety practices, operating standard office equipment including software applications, and preparing and maintaining accurate records
  • Ability to adapt to changing work priorities, communicate with diverse groups, maintain confidentiality, work as part of a team, and work with constant interruptions
  • Ability to keyboard and learn to use personal computers; may require ability to do basic signing
  • Physical requirements: seldom lifting up to 50 pounds; carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; significant fine finger dexterity
  • May need to handle medically fragile children, attend to toileting, changing diapers, tube feeding, and assisting menstruating students
  • Position requires 45% sitting, 25% walking, and 30% standing
