High Voltage Transmission Line and/or Civil Inspector

About the role

This position will be primarily responsible for performing transmission line inspections and civil inspections. This position will be a field-based position that includes working in various field offices across the state of Nevada.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field inspections of overhead and underground transmission line construction projects, including transmission structures, foundations, drilled shafts, concrete placement, conductor stringing, sagging and clipping, insulators, hardware assemblies, grounding systems, ROW access roads, and environmental compliance.
  • Generate accurate inspection reports, daily logs, non-conformance documentation, and photo records related to assigned aspects of HV/EHV transmission line construction and power delivery projects.
  • Ensure that all responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds industry standards for electric transmission safety, constructability, reliability, and system performance.
  • Follow established inspection and QA/QC practices to provide technical assistance and guidance supporting the proper construction, installation, and operation of transmission lines, foundations, structures, access roads, infrastructure, equipment, and associated civil, structural, and electrical systems in accordance with approved utility and project design specifications.
  • Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
  • Attend pre-construction, safety, and coordination meetings; respond to technical questions from contractors, utility representatives, and project stakeholders regarding inspection requirements and construction standards.
  • Prepare technical inspection reports summarizing findings and conclusions, producing complete and accurate documentation using photographs, sketches, field measurements, calculations, inspection software, spreadsheets, and 2D/3D technical drawings related to HV/EHV transmission line construction.
  • Support technical staff, project managers, and contractors with risk identification, safety observations, and constructability assessments, providing input and recommendations for mitigation, corrective action, and resolution of complex transmission line construction issues.
  • Coordinate with clients, utilities, and contractors to schedule and manage inspection activities across multiple transmission line work fronts.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 9 years of relevant post-education experience in a related discipline with demonstrated construction inspection experience on electric utility, power delivery, or transmission line projects, including overhead and/or underground transmission.
  • 5+ years of active field experience, computer skills (to properly fill out daily and weekly reports) and also be capable of photo documentation with working knowledge of Word and Excel.
  • Well-defined knowledge of construction inspection principles and field inspection practices, including HV/EHV transmission line inspection methods, QA/QC procedures, documentation, and compliance verification.
  • Strong analytical and technical judgment skills with the ability to evaluate transmission line construction conditions, safety concerns, quality issues, and compliance risks, and make sound field decisions.
  • Knowledge of transmission line work, foundations and stringing of conductors, and transmission substations and facilities, are all strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated self-leadership and field autonomy, with strong attention to detail, accuracy, documentation quality, multitasking, and prioritization in a fast-paced transmission construction environment.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to apply technical knowledge, inspection results, testing data, and field observations to reach sound conclusions and recommend practical, economical, and code-compliant solutions.
  • Current and valid driver’s license.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting plans and specifications and comparing with the customer or engineers’ standards.
  • Proficient in both verbal and written communication with the ability to communicate well with others at all levels of the organization.
  • Able and willing to travel and stay for a minimum of 6 weeks at a time for a project.
  • Able to work in extreme weather conditions for up to 12 hours a day.
  • Able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs or more at any given time throughout the day.
  • Able to walk on average 3 to 5 miles per day across rough terrain and/or unlevel surfaces.
