High School Teacher - American Sign Language

About the role

Teach one section of Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL) for three trimesters across the 2022-2023 school year. Provide quality instruction aligned to state and national standards. Use a variety of assessment strategies—diagnostic, formative, and summative—to inform instructional decisions and increase student self-management of learning. Engage students in fun and rigorous inquiry-based learning tasks that allow for deep learning of ASL while supporting the development of habits of scholarship. This position is part of the World Language Department.

Responsibilities

• Implement Minnesota State Standards and District Graduation Requirements, applying knowledge of subject matter, classroom management techniques, current best practices, and students' learning styles and needs.
• Teach required curricula using strategies that foster thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving.
• Collaborate with peers to develop, plan, and implement best practices based on student needs and abilities.
• Assess students' developmental, cognitive, and social needs and provide developmentally appropriate instruction.
• Create safe, respectful, and engaging lessons that are multicultural, gender-fair, ability-fair, and developmentally appropriate.
• Collaborate and communicate regularly with families to support educational decisions and leverage community resources.
• Assess instructional effectiveness through the Professional Development Process (PDP) and participate in ongoing professional development.

Requirements

• Demonstrated proficiency with American Sign Language.
• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university.
• MN teaching license in any content area licensed for grades 9-12, an out-of-state ASL licensure, or a four-year degree in education.

Preferred Qualifications

• A valid Minnesota American Sign Language teaching license or proof of pending approved licensure.
• Prior successful experience student teaching or teaching American Sign Language (ASL).
• Demonstrated continued professional development through coursework, research, peer collaboration, or job-embedded staff development.
• Experience and proficiency working with a culturally, ethnically, racially, and socioeconomically diverse school community.
