TITLE: STEM TUTOR, UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM POSITION: CASUAL; SEPTEMBER 1, 2026 TO MAY 21, 2027 (2-4 DAYS PER WEEK, MONDAY-FRIDAY) COMPENSATION: $23.50-$25.00/HR DOE LOCATION: In-person. 1-2 JCYC UPWARD BOUND SFUSD SCHOOL SITES ABOUT JCYC Established in 1970, JCYC was founded by students who stood in solidarity with other communities to fight for the creation of ethnic studies. Today, JCYC annually serves over 7,000 young people from all backgrounds and provides a continuum of care from preschool through college. The organization strives to offer young people a comprehensive array of services to ensure that they have the resources and support necessary to grow into healthy, productive adults. ABOUT UPWARD BOUND JCYC Upward Bound is a year-round, pre-college TRIO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The program serves San Francisco public high school students who are from low-income families and/or will be the first generation in their families to attend college. Program participants receive one-on-one advising, academic instruction, and a variety of experiences to enhance their college readiness and life skills. POSITION SUMMARY JCYC Upward Bound tutors work with students at our high school sites during and after school to provide support in various academic subjects such as math, science, and English. They will work closely with our Educational Advisors to foster a nurturing learning environment and set and track goals to guide our students’ academic growth. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Work with students individually and in small groups to complete assignments and build study skills Work with Educational Advisors to assess students’ academic needs and track student progress Communicate effectively with students and high school staff from different backgrounds to help foster an inclusive and positive learning environment Support program’s effort to cultivate a college-going mindset for students Be punctual, organized, and flexible Perform other related tasks as assigned by Educational Advisors or Associate Director SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree or current undergraduate student working towards a Bachelor's degree Experience tutoring or working with youth from low-income and/or first-generation backgrounds. High comfort level with Physics and high school math content (Algebra I to Calculus). Chemistry knowledge is a huge plus Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin and/or Cantonese is another huge plus COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS Compensation for this position is $23.50-$25.00/HR, based on experience. JCYC offers: Sick pay. No benefits and vacation accrual. 30 minute lunch break if working more than 5 hours in a day.
