About the role

The Special Education Classroom Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with a range of disabilities and learning needs, focusing on life skills.

Responsibilities

• Create and model a respectful learning environment.
• Avoid requesting or requiring disclosure of age or educational background during the initial interview.
• Plan and implement a program of study and/or specially designed instruction following state and district goals, curriculum, and requirements.
• Consult with regular education teachers to adapt/modify regular classroom curriculum.
• Serve as case manager for services to students upon placement in the Special Education program.
• Participate in and facilitate the development of individualized education programs (IEPs) for eligible students with disabilities.
• Ensure that eligibility and IEP meetings are scheduled, all mandated participants are invited, and meetings are conducted efficiently and on time.
• Inform parents/guardians of due process rights.
• Collaborate with school staff to develop and implement behavior support plans and monitor student progress toward goals of positive behavior.
• Manage time to complete required special education paperwork in a timely fashion.
• Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential records as required by law and district policy.
• Establish and maintain open lines of communication with school staff and parents/guardians concerning academic and behavioral progress of students.
• Utilize technology as related to job responsibilities.
• Reflect upon own teaching and performance and accept and implement supervisory feedback to improve skills and services to students.
• Attend and participate in Special Education and building staff meetings, and district in-service meetings.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Valid Oregon teachers license with appropriate special education endorsement and grade level authorization.
• Knowledge of state and federal special education regulations and procedures.
• Familiarity with a variety of instructional, assessment, and behavior management strategies.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to exhibit professionalism and effective human relations.
• Ability to effectively manage and supervise students and their work.
• Ability to facilitate meetings and collaboration efforts with staff and community.
• Valid Oregon Drivers License preferred.

Pay and Schedule

Salary and work year to be according to the current negotiated contract.
