About the role
The Guidance Counselor position at our school serves under the supervision of the Director of Pupil Services. Key responsibilities include assisting students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities, helping them make course and subject selections, and coordinating with teachers and community organizations to provide information on educational and career opportunities.
Responsibilities
- Aids in the scheduling of classes and obtaining information about occupational opportunities.
- Assists students with admissions, scholarship applications, and employment opportunities.
- Coordinates with administrators and teaching staff to evaluate student abilities and needs, including those with special needs.
- Researches educational and career opportunities and collaborates with teachers, college representatives, and business organizations.
- Supports new students during orientation and assists with dropout prevention efforts.
- Provides counseling to promote personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
- Organizes and maintains accurate records for student information and communicates with prospective colleges and employers.
- Encourages parental involvement and ensures effective communication between students, parents, and school staff.
- Assists in the orientation of new teachers and provides in-service training in guidance.
Requirements
This role requires a State Certification as a Guidance Counselor and a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignments. A Master’s degree is preferred. Prior teaching experience at the appropriate grade level is preferred.

- Knowledge of pre/post high school program eligibility requirements.
- Knowledge of college/university admissions processes, scholarship programs, and other educational opportunities.
- Knowledge of current developments in business and industry regarding career opportunities and employment.
- Knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
