High School Earth Science Teacher (SY 2026-27)

Hmong College Prep Academy’s mission is to provide the best integrated, challenging, and well-rounded educational experience to students in grades K-12. As a Title I Charter School, we serve students through a school-wide plan for instruction focused on the needs of at-risk students.

About the role

The High School Earth Science Teacher is responsible for instructing students in grades 9-12. This role involves creating a flexible classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth, instructing students in core curriculum areas, and motivating students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed for further education.

Responsibilities

• Provide instruction in core curriculum areas; make appropriate use of instructional resources and technologies.
• Support Minnesota Graduation and Common Core Standards; implement district and school goals and objectives.
• Evaluate student performance; promote student achievement; maintain required student records and reports.
• Perform classroom management duties; enforce rules governing student conduct; take appropriate disciplinary action.
• Provide differentiated instructional methods and content to ensure student mastery.
• Use data (screening, diagnostic, progress monitoring, daily work samples) to adjust instruction and target feedback.
• Promote a welcoming, respectful, and academically challenging learning environment.
• Maintain accurate records (attendance, grades, assessments, lesson plans) via Schoology and/or PowerSchool.
• Ensure all online class resources are current via Schoology.
• Connect with families via phone calls, emails, conferences, and school events.
• Foster a social environment to develop trust, respect, friendships, and self-discovery.
• Participate in professional development meetings/clusters; implement new learning in the classroom.
• Develop new learning based on self-assessment and input from teacher leaders.
• Utilize student achievement data to guide instructional decisions.
• Continuously seek opportunities for professional growth.
• Supervise student activities, including bus duty, breakfast/lunch duty, and other related duties.

Engagement Activities

• Volunteer activities: 3 HCPA volunteer activities are required (e.g., open houses, school dances, prom, concerts).
• Required activities: Grade-level parent meetings, fall and spring parent/teacher conferences, HCPA graduation.
• Participation in additional committees is highly encouraged.

Requirements

• Current MN teaching license in science for grades 6-12.
• BA or MA in Teaching Licensure, Education, or equivalent experience.
• 3+ years of teaching experience.
• Strong skills in classroom presentation and management.
• Knowledge of instructional technologies, research, and trends in teaching and student learning.
• Ability to utilize computer and multimedia technology.
• Knowledge of core curriculum areas, with a strong preference for candidates trained in LETRS or experienced in structured literacy and systematic, explicit instruction.
• Knowledge of teaching strategies to meet diverse student needs.
• Ability to adapt instruction for diverse student populations.
• Ability to plan and implement lessons based on district and school goals.
• Ability to evaluate student performance and foster higher achievement.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
• Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to multi-task.
• Ability to remain calm in emergency and stressful situations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with children of diverse ethnic backgrounds in an urban school setting.

Other Information

• Unofficial transcripts accepted at hire; official transcripts required within 30 days of start date.
• Formal credential evaluation required for post-secondary education completed outside the U.S.

Work Environment

• Duties performed in a school/classroom environment (multi-level building with elevator access).
• Extensive interaction with children of all ages.
• Possible exposure to loud and noisy locations (e.g., classrooms, cafeterias).
• Operate standard equipment (computer, fax, telephone, copier).
• Fast-paced environment with frequent keyboarding and telephone use.
• Ability to sit for extended periods, push, reach, or bend.
• May require weekend/evening work and occasional travel.
• Duties may occasionally include field trips, outdoor environments (athletic fields, playgrounds), and varying weather conditions.

Pay

Starting salary: $45,000 - $75,720+, with additional lanes based on the position.
