About the role
The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly-talented scientists to engage in ongoing NASA research projects at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at a NASA-affiliated research institute. These one- to three-year fellowships are competitive and are designed to advance NASA’s missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology.
Responsibilities
- Direct detection of faint emission from exoplanets and exozodiacal/debris disks
- Test and use new high-contrast near-neighbor detection techniques at the Palomar Observatory
- Work on either or both of two facilities available on the Hale 200-inch telescope: an off-axis subaperture and a rotating multi-aperture nuller
- Conduct technical work in either or both areas, including observational searches for faint companions such as brown dwarfs and hot young planets around nearby stars
- Eventually deploy work on larger telescopes and in space
Requirements
- Doctoral degree completed within the last five years
- Strong background in astrophysics
- Experience with adaptive optics and coronagraphs
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Knowledge of exoplanet detection techniques and methods
