Hematology - Research Faculty

About the Role

The Division of Hematology is seeking a lab-based scientist to expand and strengthen its translational research portfolio. The successful candidate will collaborate with physician-scientists and clinical investigators focused on sickle cell disease, hemostasis and thrombosis, vascular malformations, and other hematologic disorders. Areas of research interest include translational coagulation, vascular biology, gene therapy, erythrocyte biology, pharmacology, genomic modifiers of disease, and precision therapeutic approaches.

This individual will serve as a key translational research partner to Hematology clinical subspecialists, advancing discoveries from the laboratory to clinical application. The position supports the Division’s strategic growth priorities and ongoing investment in vascular malformation care, coagulation research, and innovative diagnostic and therapeutic development for hematologic diseases.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research both independently and collaboratively, often dependent upon or associated with other ongoing research projects or service-related work. Ensure all research functions operate at the highest level of quality while maintaining fiscal soundness.
• Participate in collaborative research projects through interactions with researchers and individuals from other divisions/departments.
• Mentor graduate students, post-doctoral and research fellows, residents, and students involved in the research mission.
• Contribute to research and teaching by serving as a teacher, role model, and mentor internally; participate in the development and direction of research and/or educational programs at the division, department, or system level.
• Complete evaluations for students, residents, and peers.
• Maintain currency in the field through continuing education, literature, and seminars; enhance professional knowledge by attending seminars and professional meetings and implementing knowledge into research.
• Lead the integration of existing programs and the development and growth of major initiatives within the assigned department and/or program.
• Lead program development for service and/or administration, including:
  • Leadership roles in developing innovative programs for research, patient care, or educational purposes.
  • Significant leadership roles in directing an academic division, medical center, or university.
  • Leadership roles in regional and national professional societies, program committees, and governing boards.
• Lead the development of departmental policies, procedures, and standards.
• Serve as a role model for effective interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships and encourage team concepts.
• Develop and guide the implementation of long- and short-term goals and objectives aligned with the Division and medical center strategic objectives.
• Serve in a leadership role within the Institute or medical center.
• Participate as a member of the leadership team in developing consensus on programs, approaches, issues, and new initiatives within the Department.
• Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to scholarly activities at an advanced level, including:
  • Publication of original research, educational research, clinical observations, reviews, chapters, or books.
  • Leadership roles in research trials and/or investigations.
  • Membership on editorial boards or editorship of textbooks or journals.
• Apply advanced training in research methods to design and conduct clinical research in areas of clinical specialty.
• Develop research programs in areas of clinical specialty.
• Demonstrate effectiveness in securing grant funding for research initiatives and programs; mentor and assist other faculty in grantsmanship.
• Develop and grow new externally funded research initiatives, including securing major grants from the National Institutes of Health or other sources.

Requirements

• PhD degree in a related scientific or research field.
• 3+ years of related experience in a research field and/or lab experience assisting with the preparation of data for presentation at scientific meetings.
• Instructor, Assistant, or Associate Professor appointment or eligibility required.
