About the Role
You will serve as a Rigger Helper or a Heavy Mobile Equipment Helper, assisting journey workers with common and typical tasks of the trade. You will perform more difficult work under close supervision, use basic hand and power tools, and follow written and verbal instructions while adhering to established safety procedures.
Responsibilities

- Rigger Helper duties:
- Obtain, install, remove, store, and maintain basic rigging equipment (e.g., chain hoists, slings, wire ropes, shackles, beam clamps, rollers).
- Conduct weight handling tests.
- Place chaffing gear around easily damaged parts of a load or equipment.
- Clear crane passageways of obstacles and warn nearby personnel.
- Perform routine duties such as crane walking, signaling crane operators, and directing personnel away from hazardous areas.
- Secure and lash heavy loads to truck trailers.
- Fabricate, inspect, test, and certify rigging equipment.
- Splice fiber, synthetic, or wire ropes.
- Heavy Mobile Equipment Helper duties:
- Maintain and repair equipment by removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn parts.
- Perform overhauls, fabrication, modifications, troubleshooting, testing, and replacement or adjustment of parts.
- Conduct basic minor structural preservation.
- Work on various types of weight handling equipment, including cranes (portal, mobile, floater, bridge, jib, monorail, wall), forklifts, chainfalls, Heavy Lift Transports (HLT), generators, and other lifting, handling, and support equipment.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
- Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
- New employees must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
- Appointment of retired military members within 180 days of retirement is subject to 5 U.S.C. 3326.
- Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.
- Must successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- Must obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance. Failure to do so may result in withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana). Random testing will be conducted.
- Must wear personal protective equipment (e.g., helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, safety shoes) continuously during work shifts.
- Work is performed in areas with potentially harmful physical and chemical agents (e.g., fumes, dust, heat, radiation, chemicals). Participation in medical surveillance programs is required.
- May require travel to CONUS and OCONUS locations, including remote or isolated sites. Must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.
- May be exposed to high noise levels.
- May require lifting/carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- May require working an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Overtime or night differential pay may apply.
- Requires visual acuity, color vision, depth perception, and close hand-eye coordination.
Qualifications
Although no specific length of time and experience is required, you must demonstrate through experience and training that you possess the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the duties of the position. Emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the duration. Your qualifications will be evaluated based on your ability to perform the work with no more than normal supervision (screen-out element).
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).
