About the Role

Operates one or more types of trucks and assists with traffic control. Moves heavy equipment around the City using a lowboy trailer. Performs labor duties as necessary.

Responsibilities

• Drives heavy trucks including dump trucks, street maintenance vehicles, tractors, and lowboy trailers.
• Performs maintenance work on City streets including working with asphalt and patching potholes.
• Utilizes a variety of heavy equipment, machinery, and tools.
• Maintains proper working order of vehicles, equipment, and machinery.
• Cleans streets with a street sweeper; operates a truck loader, ditches material, and performs dump truck maintenance duties.
• Checks drains and ditches for blockage; removes obstructions with a chain saw or hand saw; cleans ditches periodically and after heavy rains.
• Repairs and replaces damaged street signs; builds forms, fences, and barricades for use by the street department.
• Assists in performing unskilled or semi-skilled labor such as digging ditches, covering ditches, pouring concrete, mowing, trimming trees, and shrubs.
• Drives a City vehicle for City business use.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• At least one (1) year of truck driving experience.
• Valid Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL) class A or B.
• Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
• Knowledge of hazards and safety rules and precautions of operating heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operation.
• Knowledge of commercial trucks.
• Skill in organization and time management.
• Ability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature.
• Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to maintain good planning and organizational skills.
• Ability to take and follow directions from supervisor.
• Ability to give directions and gain compliance from assigned staff.
• Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.
• Ability to maintain a valid Texas Driver License and a good driving record.
• Ability to project a positive and professional image of the City.
• Ability to effectively communicate orally in the Spanish language.

• Ability to maintain good health and physical condition sufficient to permit full performance of job duties.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards, with the majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.
• Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, with frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or moving objects.
• Work environments include office, outdoor, street (near moving traffic), construction sites, confined spaces, vehicles, and warehouse environments.
• Exposures include extreme heat (above 100 degrees), loud noises (85+ decibels), extreme cold (below 32 degrees), moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, individuals who are hostile or irate, and individuals with known violent backgrounds.
• Frequent local travel required; no regional, national, or international travel.
