HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC LEADER

This position is in the Crane Maintenance Division (Code 730) and the Lifting & Handling Department (700) of Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate proper work methods and provide on-the-job training for workers.
  • Ensure safe work practices and good housekeeping while assuring timely availability of tools, equipment, materials, and procedures.
  • Keep the first-line supervisor informed of job progress and job performance.
  • Ensure proper inter-trade and inter-shop coordination for timely yet orderly job completion.
  • Operate cranes, hoists, forklifts, and hand trucks to handle heavier material and equipment.
  • Work in excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness, or chilling weather conditions, both inside and outside.
  • Work on slippery or uneven surfaces, from ladders and platforms, in awkward and uncomfortable positions, and enter accesses 18” in diameter.
  • Wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes continuously during the work shift.
  • Work around machinery and moving parts, moving objects, elevations, electricity, sharp edges, and confined spaces.
  • Adhere to medical surveillance programs and periodic medical examinations due to exposure to potentially harmful physical and chemical agents (e.g., fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and chemicals).

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
  • New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date is subject to provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
  • May require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS, including remote or isolated sites, via military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.
  • Required to lift or carry weights up to 45 pounds.
  • Must have physical capabilities for working in various environmental conditions.
  • Required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position.

  • Experience utilizing broad knowledge of heavy mobile equipment systems and equipment.
  • Experience applying sufficient knowledge of trade theory and techniques.
  • Understanding of operational theory, check-out procedures, and skill to perform heavy mobile equipment mechanic work.
  • Experience demonstrating and articulating knowledge and skill to co-workers on these systems and components.
  • Applicants must meet the requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualification Handbook for Trades and Labor Occupations.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).
